What a website actually costs in Australia

Nobody in this industry publishes prices, so here are the numbers other business owners have posted in public, including the ones who paid tens of thousands and got nothing.

Every agency site you open says the same thing. Every project is different. Contact us for a quote. That is true and it is also convenient, because it means you cannot compare anyone until you have already spent an hour of your time.

I went and read what Australian business owners actually say they paid, in public forum threads where nobody was selling anything. Here is what came back.

The range that is normal

Three thousand to eight thousand dollars is where most quotes for a small business website land, and where owners describe the price as expensive but fair.

Above ten thousand, resistance sets in fast unless it is ecommerce. One owner with an eight product clothing store was quoted an average of fifteen to twenty thousand across several providers and came online to ask whether she was being taken for a ride.

Below one thousand, the reaction flips to suspicion rather than delight. In one thread a provider offered a complete site for five hundred dollars and the person asking replied, and I am quoting the tone exactly, yeah nah. Cheap did not win the work.

So the honest answer to what a website costs is that the market has already decided: under five thousand with maintenance and search included is what an informed buyer considers reasonable.

The numbers that should worry you

The same threads are full of people who paid far more than that and got nothing. One agency client paid three thousand dollars a month for onsite SEO for two years. When another agency logged in to audit it, what they found was the free Yoast plugin installed and eight pages touched. Seventy two thousand dollars.

Others in the same threads report five thousand five hundred a month for five months with zero results, thirty thousand total that took a lawyer to escape, and twenty nine thousand with no measurable change in revenue.

The pattern in every one of those stories is not the price. It is the contract. Twelve, eighteen, twenty four months, automatic renewal, ninety days notice to cancel, and a direct debit that keeps running after you have asked it to stop.

The question that actually protects you

Price is the wrong thing to negotiate first. Ownership is.

Ask who the domain is registered to. Ask who owns the hosting account. Ask whether you get the files if you leave. There are documented cases of agencies telling clients that the website files are the agency's exclusive property, offering to sell the client their own content back, and threatening copyright action if they reused their own text.

If the answer to all three is you, the price becomes a straightforward commercial decision. If the answer is anything else, the price is irrelevant because you are not buying an asset, you are renting one.

Quick answers

What should a small business website cost in Australia?

Most quotes land between three and eight thousand dollars, and informed buyers describe under five thousand with maintenance and search included as reasonable. Above ten thousand there is real resistance unless it is ecommerce, and below one thousand buyers become suspicious rather than pleased.

Is a cheap website a false economy?

Often, but not because cheap work is always bad. It is because the cheapest offers usually exclude the parts that make a site earn anything: the search work, the structured data, and the ongoing maintenance. A five hundred dollar site that nobody finds costs more than a five thousand dollar one that rings the phone.

Who should own my domain name?

You, personally or in your company name, with the login in your possession. If the agency registered it, you do not control your own address. Getting it back from an unwilling agency is documented as slow, expensive and sometimes impossible.

How long should a web or SEO contract be?

Long lock ins exist to protect the agency, not you. The complaints that end in lawyers are almost always eighteen or twenty four month terms with automatic renewal. A month to month arrangement, or a fixed project with a clear end, puts the pressure where it belongs.

How do I know if my SEO agency is doing anything?

Ask for the list of what changed on your site this month, not a report of impressions. Impressions are not work. If nobody can name a change, log in and look: an audit that finds only a free plugin installed is a real and documented outcome.
